Desperate for a Win?

My name is Daniel. I was an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, and am now a writer who has
published four books including South Korea: Our Story by Daniel Nardini.
It seems that South Korean President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Donald
Trump are desperate for a “win” in dealing with North Korea. They are desperate for very different
reasons. Moon wants to make himself look like he is bringing “peace” to the Korean peninsula and
is trying to dodge the growing Druking Scandal. Trump has not succeeded at any major foreign
policy “win” and is busy working on secret negotiations with the North Koreans to try and come up
with something that I would call a “face-saving” agreement. Ironically, it seems that North Korea
is in the driver’s seat with having the flexibility of making whatever agreements they want and not
feeling as much pressure to conclude an agreement with either Moon or Trump. North Korean
Kim Jong-un’s peace offensive seems to be paying off as Kim appeals to Moon’s leftist base
and their desires. Trump has not been all that successful with many world leaders—especially
with those from the European Union overall. IF Trump can get something that is a major “win”
somewhere, anywhere, then this may help him with other world leaders. Oh, but there are problems
with dealing in complicated negotiations that can go just as easily wrong or in an unintended
direction. We have to remember that North Korea has been planning to attain nuclear weapons
for decades from Kim Il-sung to the current leader. Why change this strategy now? Trump will
claim that he has backed Kim into a corner. I simply do not believe that. Moon will say that Kim
is “honorably” trying to bring peace to the Korean peninsula. I simply do not believe this either. The
greatest mistake is that so many rich and powerful people may think they know what North Korea
is going to do. So many of the best and brightest leaders long before Donald Trump have failed
to defeat and control North Korea and the Kim dynasty, so why should this be anymore
successful?!
